Are 30 years the people of Isama, Bolivia finally have clean drinking waterThe pump is an electric pump and the goal was that electricity would be available by the time the system completed. This community was so excited and have waited so long that Etta Projects decided to install a generator that will run the pump and fill the tank until the electricity is finally available in 2021. The community and our team really wanted this project to come to fruition before the end of 2020 and now we can say “mission accomplished”. This is Etta Projects first river diversion system, and we are grateful for all the players that helped us design and think through each part and for the tenacity of the community to never give up. There is a system for chlorination at the tank level and each family has already built a second filtration system with home candle filters for drinking. After 30 years of living in this village they finally have clean running water. Thank you, for making this miracle happen for this small village on the edge of the Amboró National Park. Thanks to Past President Bob Kagy and the Thurston County Rotary Water Projects Committee for completing this project! Past President Bob Kagy sent this awesome news so that it will be posted on our website. |

District 5020 Foundation ChampionsIn the March issue of the Rotary District Newsletter, they featured Joseph Beaulieu as well as a few of the District 5020 Rotary Foundation Champions Rotarians. You have all been identified as Rotary Foundation Champions. In other words, you are the few Rotarians in District 5020 who have already donated enough to be Major Donors, you have made an ongoing commitment to donate $1,000 per year to the Rotary Foundation and you have made a commitment to leave at least $10,000 to the Rotary Foundation Endowment Joseph Beaulieu’s statement: I joined Lacey Rotary in February of 1981. At that time I wasn't into giving to The Rotary Foundation. I was more interested in giving to local causes. I didn't understand what being a true Rotarian meant in those days. In 1985 Rotary International started Polio Plus. We had a Rotarian in our Lacey Rotary Club who had been stricken with Polio as a child. We meet at the Red Bull Restuarant for our regular Rotary meeting. It was before ADA took effect and we were meeting on the second floor before they required elevators. One of the past presidents, Chan Sooge made a wooden carrier seat so we could have the Rotarian stricken by Polio taken up to the meeting room. My childhood neighbor was stricken by Polio as a child. I was reminded of the struggles he went through as he dealt with his Polio. I remember as a child we were required to take naps so we wouldn't get Polio. So when Polio Plus started in 1985 I became a regular contributor to The Rotary Foundation because of those 2 people struggles. That was when I became a true Rotarian. Since then I wanted to start contributing not only by dollar amounts but by boots on the ground. I haven't been to countries to eradicate Polio yet but I have been to countries to help with Water Purification and Sanitation and Health Education, I serve on a committee with 12 other Rotary Clubs that combine efforts for Water and Sanitation projects in 3rd world countries. It gives me satisfaction that I am doing what little I can to make the world a better place! |

Military Family Statue to be Unveiled Sept. 30th @10am!Military Family Statue to be Unveiled Sept. 30th @10am!Posted by Greg Stevens We are coming to the end of a 2 plus year Hawk's Prairie Rotary project! The Statue titled "In Support of Military Families" will be dedicated and installed on Saturday Sept. 30th at 10am! Hawk's Prairie Rotarians have a right to be jubilant in December of 2004, then President Jim Rydland sent a letter to some 2500 Military March Supporters, describing the Statue project and asking for financial help to pull the project off! It was estimated at that time, that the project would cost somewhere near $100,000. President Jim Rydland, took up the charge seriously, and made it Hawk's Prairie Rotary's Centennial Project. The City of Lacey, ponied up $20,000 to help make this project happen, not only that, City Mgr. Greg Couio started meetings with the club and the Developer of the Home Depot site, talking about a possible location for the statue. The Developer, excited about the project, spent considerable time and resources to fund and build the Statue's formal home, complete with flagpoles, landscaping and concrete architecture. His part of the project alone amounts to around $250,000! Bob Kagy of ABC Printing, developed a lithograph, after artist Garreth Curtis put together an artist's rendering of the actual statue, and it was sold , and is still being sold to raise money for the statue project. I might add that Bob neither charged for the printing or the paper for the project. This statue was inspired by the success of the Al Eckroth conceived March to Support Military Families, all the while growing in stature and complexity. During Jim Rydland's reign as HP Rotary President, Honorary member, Evelyne Betti stepped forward and donated $50,000 to the project. This put the event within our grasp. Another $20,000 was pledged from the City of Lacey. They have also agreed to maintain the site after completion. The other major donors are America's Credit Union and Venture Bank who have given $10,000. The Steve Boone foundation have also donated $5000 toward the project . After Jim Rydland left town, Hawk's Prairie Rotary's Charter President, Joseph Beaulieu of Venture Bank took over the charge to finish up this project. Then we had to schedule dignitaries and timing with the artist to actually finish and install the Military Statue in it's final resting place on Sept. 30th, 2006.This is your invitation to attend what will be a significant accomplishment by all concerned with this 5 year old Rotary Club, The Rotary Club of Hawk's Prairie-Lacey. Please be proud of your accomplishment. Dick Drew, Centennial Past District Governor of Rotary District 5020 will be on hand to read a declaration for the President of Rotary International, also Mayor of Lacey Virgil Clarkson and several dignitaries from Fort Lewis, McChord AFB, Camp Murray and other military installations will attend as well as Artist Garreth Curtis ...You plan on being there too! |

Hawks Prairie Rotary Heros
The Hawks Prairie Rotary Club recently sponsored 10 student recognition awards aptly titled, "Hawk Prairie Heroes." Teachers and counselors from North Thurston Public Schools were asked to nominate students who had overcome a social, emotional, or financial barrier to improve themselves in the school environment and/or provide a distinctive service to the school or community.
"For some students the opportunities afforded to others just aren't there," said Hawks Prairie Rotarian and Asst. Supt. of NTPS, Brian Wharton, who made the presentations. "There are many scholarships and awards given strictly just for academic achievement. These students have gone above and beyond transcending personal barriers, physical and learning disabilities, family challenges and so much more.yet they all completed graduation requirements and are making plans for their future."
The students and their friends and family were invited to a Rotary luncheon where they received a plaque and a $250 scholarship award. This year's recipients are: Jordan Malizio (SSHS), Seung Lee (NTHS), Vihn Phan (NTHS), Kamara Green ( NTHS), Ashanta Hollis (THS), Rachel Coley (THS), Lindsey Keith (THS), Blake Geyen (RRHS), Coty Wargnier (RRHS), Tiffany Gilpin (RRHS).

New Photos Albums
OLYMPIA, Oct. 15 - I've struggled with a clean way to post and share all the photos I've had the privilege to take over the past couple of years. The ClubRunner site (our site here) just is too cumbersome for anything but one or two images. SO.... I've set up a separate website that you can link to to view photos. I have two of this season's biggest events - The Mushroom Festival and the 2008 Military Family Support March posted. You can access them by going to this site: http://web.me.com/jlofoto/HPR_Photos.
I will continue to sort and post different album, so check this new site frequently. Or better yet, sign up on the RSS feeder to be notified of updates to the albums automatically. I hope you enjoy these images as much as I do taking them! |

Hawks Prairie Rotary Can Make History -- Again!!
Lacey, Nov. 16 - Treacy Duerfeldt, District 5020 Foundation Permanent Fund Chair, told the HPR members today that they have a chance to make zone, district (and maybe national) Rotary history again. HPR was the first club in the District to achieve 100% sustaining members in Paul Harris. HPR has maintained this distinction every year since it was founded.
Now, Duerfeldt challenges HPR to achieve 100% Benefactors and be the first (or one of the first) clubs in the country to do so. We are very close! If we can do this before January 1, 2008, Duerfeldt promises to make sure we are recognized nationally. Becoming a Benefactor is easy. The only requirement is to pledge at least $1000 to the Rotary permanent fund in your estate planning. See Sherry Jennings or Shawn Lewis for more information. Treacy Duerfeldt is available to discuss other ways of giving to the Permanent Fund. Treacy joined Rotary at age 26 and was mistaken for an exchange student by his new club! Since then, he's become a Level 4 Bequest Society member, a Benefactor, a Multiple Paul Harris Fellow, a member of the Paul Harris Society. Treacy is a 3rd generation Rotarian. His dad is a Past District Governor and his granddad is a past member of Tacoma #8. Please become a Benefactor and help Hawks Prairie Rotary set the standard for Rotary clubs across the USA and make Rotary history once again!! |

January is Membership Month at HPRGrowing our membership* is important for us! It increases the number of people contributing to the Rotary mission, the money Rotary raises through the collection of dues, and the networking capabilities of this group as a whole. That's why bringing in new members is everyone's responsibility at Hawk's Prairie Rotary! For the first time, in order to help jumpstart our 2008 membership recruitment, we are officially declaring January as "Hawk's Prairie Rotary Membership Month"! Our goal is 100% participation and we are encouraging every HP Rotarian to bring one guest to one meeting in the month of January. Here's how it will work: |

Vocational Services
This Committee "Spotlight" is on Vocational Services.
From Grace Kendall: As business leaders, Rotarians share their
skills and expertise through vocational service, one of the Four
Avenues of Service. Your vocational service efforts can play a vital
role in improving the quality of life for those hardworking members of
the community who need direction and expertise. By participating in any
of a number of vocational service activities ---- mentoring, career
days, vocational awards, business assistance, or even talking about
your job at a club meeting. Through Vocational Services you can turn
your experience into an invaluable resource for others. |

Though the conversation was private, it is rumored that Santa warned Mr. Balsley to be nicer in his editorial remarks in the coming year. Second in line was young Joseph Oczkewicz. Though again, the conversation was held in confidence, reportedly amoung other things, Joseph asked for a new baby brother or sister. This report is unconfirmed. Merry Christmas to all!! |

Sadly, the Club recognized the death this week in IraqÃ' of Sgt. Lucas White from Fort Lewis' 1st Battalion, 23rd Regiment, 3rd Brigade, 2nd Infantry Division, with a moment of silence.Ã' There will be a memorial service for Sgt. 5020 District Governor Speaks of Peace at HPR
SEPTEMBER 29, 2006 - 5020 District Govenor, Erik Frederickson (Port Townsend), spoke to Hawks Prairie Rotary about his plans for the coming year. The theme of his term, "Rotary Serves Peace" is not a 60's anti-war slogan - rather it refers to all the programs Rotary International sponsors to provide aid throughout the world. By serving the vast majority of those less fortunate than us in North America and other developed nations, Rotary will promote peace more effectively than any political statement. This message of peace also refers to establishing policies and guidelines for the protection of the of Rotary exchange guests against harassment and sexual predation.

Sherry Jennings Honored
Sherry Jennings was honored by District 5020 Governor Joan Firkins, at the March 17th meeting for her endowment to the Permanent Fund of the Rotary Foundation of Rotary International.
The Permanent Fund ensures The Rotary Foundation's ability to meet the urgent needs of the future through an endowment. An endowed contribution is a gift that the Foundation holds in perpetuity. The gift is invested, and only a portion of its investment return is used for purposes specified by the donor. To guard against inflation, the remaining investment return is added to the principal. The goal is to ensure that the principal maintains its real value over time. Thus, gifts to the Permanent Fund will grow and continue to support The Rotary Foundation for years to come. More information of the Permanent Fund may be found at: http://www.rotary.org/foundation/development/permanentfund/gift.html . |
