After graduating from North Thurston High School, Mike earned his BBA from PLU and worked in the finance field for 15 years. Later, he earned his Masters in Teaching and taught 6th grade math for 12 years at Lydia Hawk, Meadows, and Nisqually. He joined the NTEF board in 2014, and became the Treasurer in 2015. In 2016 he was hired as the Executive Director.

There are 150 unaccompanied youth, 950 homeless students and over 6,400 North Thurston Public School students living at or below the poverty level. The Foundation breaks down financial barriers for students so they can be successful in the classroom. In 2017, the Foundation donated $250,000 to this success through scholarships, student assistant grants and learning improvement grants. Seniors can earn 1 of 30 scholarships valued from $2,000 to full tuition for a year. All 22 schools receive money so educators can purchase items for students; clothes, food, school fees and anything else students need so they can concentrate on learning. Educators apply for grants up to $1500 so they can make learning more fun and interesting for their students.
